Nestled in the heart of the city of Exeter is a ‘chocolate box’ cottage. With its views over the trees of Longbrook valley, there is the feel of seclusion, yet it is only minutes away from Exeter’s Restaurants and Bistros. Because of bomb damage, the original side extension had had too many makeovers and add-ons. The clients wished to tansform the property by adding an eco-friendly and contemporary extension.
The task was to remove the existing structures and construct a two storey extension reusing as much as possible of the demolished old extension. The main emphasis of the project was to construct an extension that provided the family with more space and light, and has a low impact on the environment. This was achieved with high levels of insulation, large sections of glass, a brown roof system and many other features.
The contemporary look was achieved by adding a glass balcony to the front elevation, cedar clad brise soleils and bi-folding doors. Internally the new space has provided the family with a dining / family room, two bathrooms, a bedroom and two great outdoor spaces. It was all finished to a contemporary style with curved walls, rose wood flooring, bold colours and contrasting textures and surfaces.
